The ABC of RBC [Responsible Business Conduct]

Project summary:

The implementation of human rights due diligence [HRDD] schemes in multinational companies is accelerating as management anticipates the implementation of transnational binding rules in the near future, be it that of the newly adopted EU corporate sustainability due diligence directive, or that of a UN binding Treaty on business and human rights which is under discussion.
IndustriAll Europe and its sister organisation IndustriALL Global Union have long been advocating for the full involvement of trade unions and their representatives in the design, implementation, monitoring and enforcement of companies’ due diligence policies. Until a coherent transnational legal framework is implemented, trade unions and their representatives have to navigate into an ocean of scattered tools and instruments to find support for their action: ILO/UN/OECD guidelines, national HRDD laws, provisions in European works councils and in Global framework agreements, multiple EU directives (on sustainability reporting, on due diligence in specific sectors)…

Moreover, with actions targeting the defence of human and workers’ rights in global supply chains, trade unions are compelled to embrace a genuine transnational approach that goes beyond the EU borders.
The project, which is run jointly by industriAll Europe and IndustriALL Global Union, intends to build trade unions’ capacity to promote HRDD in manufacturing and mining companies through existing tools and resources. Practical recommendations for trade union action across the globe will be derived from a series of sectoral seminars addressing the specificities of HRDD in the garment, steel, mining and automotive supply chains. The sectoral seminars and the final conference will help empower trade union representatives through the exchange of experiences, including on how to coordinate their action between the national, European and the global levels. In brief, the project intends to deliver the ABC of RBC [Responsible Business Conduct] to trade unions.
