European Parliament Votes in favour of a Just Transition Fund
Friday 17 February 2017
On 14 February 2017, the European Parliament voted on the revision of the ETS Directive in its plenary session. industriAll Europe is satisfied with the large support that the Parliament gave to the Commission’s proposal of 15 July 2016. The present proposal and the outcome of the debate in the European Parliament support our demand for a system that strikes a balance between environmental and climate policy targets that have to be met and the need to maintain industrial competitiveness and safeguard employment. IndustriAll Europe is especially happy that the Parliament took up the trade union demand to set up a Just Transition Fund with the income of the ETS allowances for measures to support workers and communities that will lose employment through the decarbonisation process.
“The vote in the European Parliament in favour of establishing a Just Transition Fund for the effected workers and communities is a step in the right direction”, said Luc Triangle, General Secretary of industriAll Europe, “However, the proposal will now have to be discussed with the Council. industriAll Europe and its affiliates will continue convincing European leaders at member state level of the great necessity to establish the Just Transition Fund and thus to promote a socially-just energy transition in Europe.”
